The Marula is a native African tree, and it has been mentioned in some ancient African poetry and folklore. The marula fruit tree (Sclerocarya birrea) is native to parts of Southern Africa. The trees grow wild and were once rare, but are now cultivated.

Once considered sacred, the marula tree was linked to fertility and happy marriage in ancient times. The fermented fruit of the marula tree was also thought to intoxicate elephants, who seem to adore its delicious taste as much as people do.

Many parts of the marula tree are used as ingredients in food and traditional medicine throughout Africa. Each marula fruit contains a hard, brown nut with pliable, white kernels at its core.

Marula oil is primarily extracted from these kernels, but can also be obtained from the nut’s outer husk. Marula oil is rich in protein and easily absorbed, making it an effective skin and hair treatment.

The Fynbos used in the scrub is Karoo Duckfoot (Pentzia Dentata) is an aromatic shrub with soft, grey foliage and clusters of yellow flowers that bloom from spring to summer. The leaves are flat and shaped like wedges, which gives it the distinct appearance of duck's feet. It grows widely from the Northern Cape to the Eastern and Western Cape in parts of dry fynbos, on dry stony hill slopes and in disturbed veld. The aroma has mood elevating & calming properties. Common indigenous names: Greater Skaapkaroo, Duck's-footkaroo (English), Grootskaapkaroo, Eendepootkaroo (Afrikaans).

The Cape Snowbush (Eriocephalus Africanus), also known as the wild or African rosemary, is native to the Western Cape of South Africa. It is an evergreen shrub, with dark green needle like leaves. Cape snowbush essential oil is produced using traditional methods and is obtained from the blossoms of the plant. Its essential oil uplifts the mood and acts as an antidepressant. It is also a sedative, relieving feelings of stress, anxiety and anger in the user. This oil also has a variety of physical benefits. It is antiseptic, protecting the body from infections. It protects the body from viral infections, such as the common cold and flu. It also acts as an effective decongestant, relieving the symptoms of colds and flu.
